This is a mule made from two Civil War tokens cut and joined to form what appears to be a trial or sample piece. Nobody in their right mind would today would take two samples or such a high grade, and do this. Therefore I believe it was done back in the time as a sample and then saved for a very long time together with others, evidence by shape of the corrosion. The two halves are keenly and skillfully soldered together with what appears to be a brass solder evidenced by the distinctly yellow tint of the metal. There is a very precise seem all then around the edge with a very clean and tight tolerance This was done with precise machining and high skill evidenced by the fact there is no damage to either half. How do they hold it without damaging it? or heat up that high of temperature without surface damages? Two graders looked at it at the FUN Show and neither notice that it was 2 made into one. The first grader said: “Heartbreaker. Highest grade I have seen in a while but it will be rejected. Do not submit. The second grader said: ” Wow . Nice token, except the corrosion that I’m sure you are ware of “. Now if I pointed out the seam to then and show them the seam, I can imagine what they might say. The two sides of this token can’t be found together on a token.
Side A: Crossed cannons, Union 61-76 with flags, capped top, laurel wreath.
Side B: UNION FOREVER – wreath of two types of leaves, small shield at bottom.
This a cool piece, maybe worth a lot.
